Children's Health
Sometimes the best way to positively affect health is through policy changes. Policy interventions such as the reduction of smoking in America, the implementation of seat belt laws and city planning to create a greater sense of community are just a few of the major developments in recent years. For example, an article in the September 2004 issue of the
American Journal of Public Health
contends that policy interventions played a significant role in reducing the prevalence of smoking in this country.
In the Know
As a nonprofit organization, our role in the policy arena is to educate – to ensure that accurate, adequate and readily accessible information is available to public, local and state leaders and policymakers for the purpose of informed decision-making. Knowledgeable citizens are more likely to influence their elected leaders to develop sound health-focused policy. Elected leaders, encouraged by their electorate and armed with compelling data, are more likely to enact such legislation.
An Objective Source
At the top of our list in policy work is the creation of the
Kansas Health Institute (KHI)
. This vital organization provides clear and compelling information to policymakers and the people who influence them for the purpose of sound decision-making and policy development.
Mission
To improve the health of all Kansans by providing the information and skills necessary for elected officials and engaged citizens to make effective decisions.
